Basic Certificate in Dental Assisting

Synopsis:

This is the introductory course to Dental assisting. This course will cover from basic communication to handling different dental procedures. In any dental treatment Dental Assistants play a vital role as most of the dental procedures are 4-hands procedures. This 3-day course focuses on giving practical knowledge on dentistry which will be useful in clinical work. Eligible student will be offered an employment opportunity with Q & M Dental Group upon completion of course.

    ABOUT THIS COURSE


    The course will cover 5 subjects/modules as follows:


    1. Dental Administration and Communication
    2. Dental Charting and Chair side assisting
    3. Dental Radiology, Basic pharmacology and Emergency management
    4. Endodontics (Root canal treatment)
    5. Extraction and surgical procedure I – LA Op

    >Average teacher-student ratio: 1 : 20 (for lecture), 1 : 4 (for clinical supervision)


    After each module, students will be assessed on both their theoretical knowledge and practical expertise (where applicable). The assessment is in the form of:

    Synopsis:
    Dental Assistant is an important part of dental management team. Students will be taught the important roles of a dental assistant such as being a team player, knowing their responsibilities and how to communicate effectively with patients.

    Synopsis:
    Dental Charting is the method of recording the current conditions in the patient's mouth. Besides recording the numbers of teeth present or absent, it also records past treatment done. This forms the baseline record before the start of treatment, and the record of during the follow-up treatment; where it can be used to track the progress of patient's oral health. It can be a useful forensic tool in identifying a person.

    Synopsis:
    Radiograph, basic pharmacology and emergency management are essential in the management of dental patients. There are different types of radiograph or x-rays are taken in dental clinic everyday. In this module student will learn about x-ray types and how to use it. Students will also be taught the common medications used in dentistry and how to manage emergency cases.

    Synopsis:
    Students will to set up instruments and material needed for root canal treatment. There will be different role play to ensure students are able to anticipate what dentist needs during the treatment.

    Synopsis:
    In this module, students are taught to differentiate the various forceps and elevators required to prepare for dental extraction and surgery. Students will set up the dental room and arrange the instruments in neat order. Role play and practical session in this module will also help students understand better.
